The seminar on Palliative Care was completed with great success in the afternoon of Monday, July 1st, 2019. The Seminar attracted people of all ages, confirming in the most eloquent way that our Palliative Care is an issue that should concern us all.
Those who attended the event at the Research Institute of Mental Health, Neuroscience and Medical Precision “Kostas Stefanis” had the opportunity to hear experts on crucial information that composes the framework for Palliative Care.
The Head of the Department for the Organization and Operation of Nursing Units of the Ministry of Health, Ms. Katsikarou Stavroula, presented the first results from the work of the National Commission for Palliative Care, highlighting the multifaceted consequences stemming from the lack of specialized services.
The Honorary Professor on Palliative Medicine of the University of Athens, and Head of the Palliative Care Unit “Tzeni Karezi”, Ms. Mystakidou Kyriaki talked on the methodology and scientifically documented processes for an extended framework of Palliative Care for chronically ill patients, aiming to ensure the quality of life throughout the course of the disease. She then presented the important educational and clinical work of the Pain Relief Unit “Tzeni Karezi” of the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
Efthimios Gotsis, President of the Phoenix Scientific – Cancer Care Department, talked about the value of nutrition and the dangers of muscle mass loss for patients, presenting us with the latest research.
Ms. Christina Nomikou, President of the organisation “Touch of Life“, spoke about the important role played by Palliative Care for the healing of the patient’s wounds and his family environment, speaking in the hearts of all.
The evening came to a close on an emotional tone as the popular actress Ms. Marianna Toumasatou, who has been supporting the work of the Palliative Care Unit over the years, held a panel with patients who shared their personal experiences with the participants.
The event was hosted under the auspices of the Panhellenic Medical Association (PIS), the Athens Medical Association (ISA) and the Central Union of Greek Municipalities (KEDE).
The President of ISA & KEDE, Mr. George Patoulis welcomed the event and expressed his unreserved support for the work of the “Tzeni Karezi” Pain Relief Unit and the establishment of pilot and innovative Palliative Care Units so that this “umbrella of relief to spread to every corner and every fellow citizen who needs it. “
